Dear Entrepreneurial Friend,

The alarm goes off at 6:30 a.m. Liz drags herself out of bed. She’s tired because she was up half the night worried about how she was going to pay next month’s rent. But today is a new day with new possibilities.

Matt sticks his head in the door. “Mom, I’m off to school.”

Liz is in the middle of typing a reply. “Have a good day.”

Matt hesitates “Remember, I have a game tonight. You’re picking me up after school, right?”

Liz keeps typing. “Yep, I’ll be there.”

“You won’t forget?”

“No. Will you get going? You’re going to be late for school.”

Matt leaves. The dog comes and bumps Liz’s hand. She pushes the dog away. “Not now, I’ll feed you once I finish this.”

More emails come in. Liz remembers she has to contact a bunch of people for this volunteer job she’s taken on at her church. Another email comes in from someone wondering if she could take on a small project. Not much money and not exactly what she does, but great exposure. She’ll be meeting some real movers and shakers in her community. She checks her calendar to see if she can squeeze it in. Yeah, she could probably fit it in – it would mean a couple of late nights and maybe missing one of Matt’s games, but she could do it. That’s what having your own business was all about, wasn’t it?

Oh and she has to do some quick research to prepare for a meeting with a potential client. And look, here’s an email for a time-management book. It would be great to be able to get more things done in a day – she better check it out. And of course there’s that marketing program she’s been thinking about doing. She went back to read the web site one more time.

Her coffee cup is empty. Time for a refill. As Liz gets up, she glances at clock. 10:03.

She stares at the clock. That can’t be right. How can it be 10 already? All she’s done is a few emails! She still has this huge to-do list to go through! And that doesn’t even include the tasks she didn’t get to yesterday. PLUS she has to attend a board meeting for a nonprofit association (she hadn’t gotten any clients yet despite all the work she’d put in, but she knew the exposure was helping her business) and a chamber mixer tonight (she’d only gotten one small client after months of attending mixers, and that client had been more trouble then he was worth, but she knew it was just a matter of time before she landed the big job). AND, oh God, she can’t forget to pick up Matt.

She drags her hand through her hair. She also needs to take a shower and eat some breakfast. The dog is lying on the floor behind her chair. His tail thumps as he looks at her. AND she has to feed the dog.

The phone rings. Liz picks it up while heading to the kitchen. It’s one of her friends. “I can’t believe it,” Liz says. “It’s 10 already and I haven’t gotten anything done yet today.”

She and her friend discuss the issue while she feeds the dog and eats half of a bagel. She checks her email a few more times.

Now it’s past 11, still no shower and still hasn’t touched the to-do list. And now she has to get ready to leave for the board meeting.

What on earth is she doing wrong? She’s busy all the time yet she doesn’t seem to get ANYTHING done. Worse, she’s not making any money.

Her credit cards were maxed out, her rent was due in another week and she has to go grocery shopping. She needs more clients, heck, she needs to bill the clients she has (she was a month overdue on getting her own billing out). If she didn’t get some money into her business and soon, she was going to have to do some serious thinking about the future of her business. Like maybe about a LACK of a future.

Like maybe she would have to get a job.

She sighs and covers her face with her hands. How could she be this busy and be making so little money? It didn’t make sense. She’s taking advantage of every opportunity that comes her way, but somehow nothing she did was translating into cold hard cash for her business.
